A Modern Response with a Historic Legacy

The Freedom House Mobile Crisis Van is more than just a vehicle; it is a community-led alternative to the traditional emergency system. Operating primarily in Liberty City and historically Black neighborhoods in Miami, this unit provides a compassionate, medical-first response to mental health and substance abuse emergencies.

We believe that a behavioral health crisis deserves a doctor, not a pair of handcuffs. Our mission is to reduce police involvement, avoid unnecessary hospitalizations, and treat our neighbors with the dignity they deserve.

Our Services: Providing Care Where You Are

When our team arrives, we don't just "swoop and scoop." We stay. We stabilize. We support. Our unit typically includes a multidisciplinary team—including doctors, therapists, or crisis specialists—to provide:

  • On-Site Assessment: Professional evaluation of mental health or substance-related distress.

  • Immediate Counseling: De-escalation and emotional support in a safe environment.

  • Harm Reduction: Access to life-saving tools like Narcan and professional wound care.

  • Safety Planning: Helping families and individuals create a roadmap for long-term stability.

  • Resource Connection: Direct links to follow-up care, housing, and social services.

The Inspiration: The Freedom House Legacy

Our work is built on the shoulders of giants. We are a modern-day successor to the Freedom House Ambulance Service, established in Pittsburgh’s Hill District in 1967.

Why the History Matters:

  • The First Paramedics: Freedom House was the first Black-staffed, community-based emergency medical service (EMS) in the U.S.

  • Pioneering Modern Care: Long before "paramedics" were a standard part of every city, the Freedom House team was inventing modern mobile intensive care and CPR protocols.

  • A Blueprint for Autonomy: Just as the original Freedom House team filled a gap left by a slow-to-respond system, DCSR’s Mobile Crisis Van ensures that Miami’s disenfranchised communities are never left to fend for themselves.

How to Reach the Team

The Mobile Crisis Van operates via community outreach and local hotlines, typically serving the community Monday through Saturday.

Important Note: If you are in a life-threatening emergency, please utilize local community health channels or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
