Our Academic Mission
At Dade County Street Response (DCSR), we believe that the future of healthcare belongs to those who are willing to step outside the hospital walls. We provide a nationally recognized learning environment where medical students and residents can move beyond traditional textbooks to practice Abolitionist Medicine—a model of care that prioritizes human dignity, social justice, and health equity.
Academic Partnerships
We are proud to serve as a primary clinical training site in collaboration with South Florida’s leading medical institutions:
-
University of Miami (Miller School of Medicine)
-
Jackson Health System
Through these partnerships, we offer immersive rotations that challenge learners to rethink the "social determinants of health" by treating them in real-time on the streets of Miami.
Our Training Tracks
1. Medical Student Clerkships & Electives
We offer structured rotations for 3rd and 4th-year medical students looking to gain hands-on experience in Street Medicine and Community Health.
-
Clinical Skills: Students learn focused history-taking, wound care, and physical exams in non-traditional environments (encampments, underpasses, and parks).
-
Interprofessional Learning: Work alongside a diverse team of EMTs, social workers, and peer specialists to understand the "Team-as-a-Safety-Net" model.
2. Resident Physician Rotations
Our residency tracks are designed for Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Emergency Medicine residents. We provide a specialized curriculum that covers:
-
Medical Stabilization: Managing chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes without the infrastructure of a traditional clinic.
-
Trauma-Informed Care: Learning to communicate and treat patients who have experienced systemic neglect and carceral trauma.
-
Disaster Response Training: Understanding the role of the medical professional within the Community Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) framework.
3. Participatory Action Research (PAR)
For students interested in the intersection of medicine and policy, we offer opportunities to participate in our Research Institute.
Community-Led Data: We don't just study communities; we empower them. Students work as co-researchers alongside impacted residents to identify health gaps and advocate for systemic policy changes.
