Our Philosophy: Solidarity, Not Charity
We believe that the people closest to the pain are the ones closest to the solution. At Dade County Street Response (DCSR), community organizing is the engine that drives our medical work. We don't see our neighbors as "disposable" or "deserving" based on their circumstances—we see them as partners in a collective struggle for a healthier Miami.
Our goal is to change material conditions by dismantling harmful systems and building new, community-led infrastructure like the Freedom Lab.
What We Do
1. Participatory Action Research (PAR)
We don’t just work in the community; we work with the community. We use research methods where residents directly impacted by housing and health inequity act as co-researchers. By involving our neighbors in the research process, we ensure that our data and advocacy are guided by those who hold the most expert insights into the systems that affect their lives.
2. Skills for Survival: Workshops & Training
We empower residents with practical, life-saving skills so they can protect one another when professional help is far away.
-
Stop the Bleed: Critical training for high-violence areas.
-
CPR & Narcan Training: Equipping neighbors to respond to cardiac arrest and overdoses.
-
Disaster Prep: Preparing neighborhoods to serve as their own safety net during hurricanes.
3. Rapid Response & Advocacy
Being a medical organization means being a voice for our patients outside the clinic walls. We mobilize to transform oppressive conditions through:
-
Street Documentation: Pushing back against city sweeps to protect the rights of unhoused individuals.
-
City Hall Statements: Bringing the medical realities of our patients to the desks of policymakers.
-
Public Awareness: Using social media and media interaction to raise awareness about the devastating effects of criminalizing poverty.
